About Celebration of Adoption

Celebration of Adoption held its first fundraiser in 2003. The goal was to bring like minded people together to benefit a great cause. Since then, the annual event has steadily grown, enjoying speakers such as Michael Reagan, Pat Nunnelee, Stephanie Fast and others.

The Founders

Steve and Evelyn spent many of the best years of their lives serving hundreds of children in out-of-home care (house parenting, cooking, gardening and fund-raising). In 1984, they personally responded to pleas of help from ministers, parents and young ladies who were facing unplanned pregnancy dilemmas.

The Drurys, who have experienced the joy of growing a portion of their family through adoption, founded New Beginnings, opened the Erwin Maternity Care Center, oversaw the addition of an international adoption program, and led The Hague Accreditation process. In early 2010, due to personal health reasons, the Drurys resigned their official leadership positions and became Lifetime Board Members of the agency. Because of the Drury’s legacy of sacrifice and “dreaming for better things” on behalf of others, New Beginnings will continue to serve children, birthmothers and adoptive families for years to come.

Tom and Debbie Velie

Tom and Debbie VelieTom and Debbie serve as the President and Domestic Program Director respectively. They have great “hearts” for adoption as a result of their decision to grow their family through international adoption in the 1980’s. Because they believe that “Every Child Deserves a Forever Family,” they are devoted to helping birthmothers, babies, older children from abroad, and adoptive parents find the matches that are perfect for each child.

Alan Nunnelee – Honorary Chair for Celebration of Adoption

nunnelee-2006.jpg Senator Nunnelee currently serves in the Mississippi State Senate. One of the hallmarks of Alan’s legislative career has been his stand for life. Through his efforts, the “Choose Life” car tag program became a reality. As the older brother of three siblings by adoption, Alan and his wife, Tori, have a heart of compassion for both children and young women who find hope for life through the empowering adoption process. Alan’s goal is to continue to build a legacy of service to those who are looking for life-giving options.
